Bratislava
Bratislava
Situated at the intersection of three cultures, archaeological findings of a Celtic settlement and a Roman fort prove the important trade route crossing and strategic importance of the city as part of the Limes Romanus. Even today, the names of the Danube metropolis bear witness to its eventful history: While the Slovaks call their capital Bratislava, in Austria the city is called Preßburg. Moreover, Bratislava was the capital of Hungary at the time of the Turkish siege of Budapest (1536 - 1783) and is still called Pozsony in Hungarian. Ten Hungarian-Austrian kings were once crowned in St. Martin's Cathedral, including Maria Theresa in 1741. The breath of the past can be felt at every turn during a tour of the old town. Trendy cafés and restaurants with the famous hearty Slovak cuisine and excellent Slovak wines attract visitors everywhere. Since 2010, the River Park and Eurovea shopping and business centers have connected the Old Town with the Danube embankment. Futuristic architecture, spacious green areas and numerous pubs and restaurants overlooking the Danube embody "urban city life" in a way you wouldn't expect in a city that was behind the Iron Curtain until 1989. In the center of the metropolis is the starting point and destination of the "Twin City Liner," a catamaran fast ship that connects Vienna and Bratislava in just 75 minutes across the Danube.
