Dürnstein
Dürnstein
Dürnstein with the wine-growing villages of Ober- and Unterloiben is considered one of the most romantic places along the Danube. Popular destinations for excursions are the monastery with its magnificent baroque church and the ruins, once the castle of the Kuenringer dynasty. The English King Richard I the Lionheart was held prisoner here in 1192/1193. A share from Richard's ransom, which was too much for the Kuenringers, enabled the castle and the town of Dürnstein to be expanded and developed in the 13th and 14th centuries. From the ruins you have a magnificent view far over the Danube valley. Beautiful hiking trails on primeval rocks, slow train rides through the vineyards followed by wine tasting. First-class gourmet restaurants, down-to-earth inns and cozy wine taverns offer guests delicacies from the kitchen and cellar. Concerts from classical music to folklore. Sports and leisure park at the Kuenringer outdoor pool.
