St. Martin's Church Linz
St. Martin's Church Linz
Almost modestly, the church building hides behind mighty trees. St. Martin's Church is considered one of the oldest ecclesiastical buildings in Austria. Its history has been rooted in that of the city of Linz for more than 1200 years. The former medieval fortification wall led from Linz Castle through the promenade, the moat and the Pfarrplatz back to the castle. St. Martin's Church was initially located outside this fortification, but due to its proximity it was part of the protective area of the castle. The first mention of St. Martin's Church as a "capella" dates back to the year 799. Inside, you can expect to see uncovered Roman inscription stones and a Roman oven. Famous is also the copy of the "Volto Santo" image, whose origin is in Lucca (Italy).
