Schlögener Donauschlinge

Schlögener Donauschlinge - Natural Wonder Upper Austria

The Danube valley has an extremely aesthetic appearance, which probably finds its climax here in the Danube gorge Schlögen. Here the power and beauty of nature can be seen. Waters have always been important for man. Through navigation, the Danube has played and still plays an important role. A less known use in the Danube valley is the cultivation of wine. Between 1000 and 1300 A.D., in the medieval warm period, wine was cultivated in the breakthrough valleys and in the lower altitudes of Upper Austria. At the height of Inzell, on the left slope of the Danube valley, there was a small-scale vineyard with walls and stair connections. Today it is completely overgrown with bushes. In Hilkering, near Aschach, wine is currently being cultivated again. The Donauschlinge Schlögen was named "Natural Wonder of Upper Austria" in 2008. This - called epigenetic breakthrough valley - rarity was formed when the Danube sought its meandering bed in the soft strata of the Tertiary and later had to maintain it on the hard granite rock. Due to the subsequent uplift of the land mass, the Danube dug itself almost 300 m deep and in this way created the narrow valley, which almost forms a full circle in the Schlögener Donauschlinge.
