Artstetten Castle
Artstetten Castle with Archduke Franz Ferdinand - Museum
In the middle of the 13th century the name Artstetten is mentioned in documents for the first time. Very soon the medieval fortress developed into a castle, which had various owners in quick succession until it was acquired by Emperor Franz I in 1823. In 1861, Archduke Carl Ludwig (brother of Emperor Franz Josef) generously remodeled the interior and exterior of the house. In 1889, Archduke Carl Ludwig gave Artstetten Castle to his eldest son, Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este, who had it remodeled according to his own ideas. Since 1913 Artstetten Palace has presented itself as we know it today: as an architecturally charming complex flanked by seven characteristic towers.
