Schönbrunn Palace Vienna

Schönbrunn Palace Vienna

Visit Schönbrunn Palace, Empress Sisi's former summer residence. The baroque complex attracts visitors with its enchanting parkland, palm house, Gloriette and the oldest zoo still in existence in the world. Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is one of the most beautiful Baroque palaces in Europe. Owned by the Habsburgs since 1569, Emperor Ferdinand II's wife had a pleasure palace built on the site in 1642 and named the estate "Schönbrunn" for the first time. The palace and gardens, built after the Turkish siege in 1696, were fundamentally redesigned under Maria Theresa after 1743. For most of the year, the Habsburgs resided in the countless rooms required by a large imperial family in addition to the state rooms. Schönbrunn Palace has 1441 rooms, 45 of which can be visited. The interior is decorated in the Rococo style (mostly white surfaces with ornaments made of 14-carat gold leaf) and includes Bohemian crystal chandeliers and tiled stoves.
