Augarten Vienna
Augarten Vienna
The Augarten was created at the beginning of the 17th century in the floodplain of the Danube as a hunting garden. In the middle of the 17th century, formal gardens were laid out when the Alte Favorita was built. Around 1677, Leopold I had the gardens renovated in the early Baroque style. The palace and park were largely destroyed during the 2nd Turkish siege in 1683. At the beginning of the 18th century, the garden artist Jean Trehet was commissioned to redesign the gardens. Joseph II opened the Augarten to the public in 1775 as the first imperial garden. In 1781, the emperor had the Josefstöckl by Isidore Ganneval (Canevale) and the Augarten Palace built on purchased land and landscaped garden sections laid out. Under Joseph II and in the 19th century, the Baroque parterre designs were simplified.
