Castle Ľubovňa
Castle Ľubovňa
Above Stará Ľubovňa, in the northeastern part of the Spiš region, Ľubovňa Castle rises from a 711-meter-high limestone cliff. In the past, crowned heads met here, the Polish crown jewels were hidden in the castle, Móric Beňovský, a noble adventurer and king of Madagascar, was imprisoned here. The castle was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. At the time of its construction, Ľubovňa Castle became part of the system of border castles in the north of Great Hungary. Besides protecting the Polish-Hungarian border, it also secured an important trade route leading to Poland through the valley of the Poprad River. In 1412, the Ľubovňa Castle hosted the historical meeting of the Hungarian King Sigismund of Luxembourg with the Polish King Vladislav II. Today there are exhibitions of the castle museum here. In 1991 the castle chapel was renovated and consecrated, and today church services are held here.
