The Buda Castle District has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and today houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Historical Museum and the Széchényi National Library.
In addition, the castle is the venue for various cultural and gastronomic events. The dome of the palace, which can be visited for a small fee, offers a beautiful view over the sprawling city. The earth beneath the castle hill is crisscrossed by a winding network of tunnels and caves, some sections of which are open to the public. The Castle Palace, its historic surroundings and its treasures, which were destroyed during and after World War II, are currently undergoing extensive restoration as part of a large-scale restoration project known as the National Hauszmann Program.
