Mauthausen
Mauthausen
For centuries, water and stone have been the foundation of the prosperity of this market, which was first mentioned in a document as "Muthusen" in 1208. At the intersection of two ancient trade routes, Mauthausen is nestled in the beautiful Mühlviertel landscape on the Danube. From west to east, one of these trade routes ran along the Danube. The other ran from north to south and was used in early times to transport salt from the Salzkammergut region to Bohemia. The name of the old "Muthusen" - the toll booth on the Danube - also comes from the toll collected here.
