Bojnický zámok castle

The jewel of Bojnice, a small town near Prievidza, is the "fairy-tale castle" Bojnický zámok, one of the most visited and beautiful castles, not only in Slovakia, but also in Central Europe. The castle was built on a travertine hill, on which a medieval castle stood in the 11th century. In the past it was owned by the most famous noble families, the last ones were the Pálfis. Today, the castle houses collections of the Museum of Art History. On display are the original furnishings and artifacts from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Unique and most valuable is a late Gothic collection of paintings - the so-called Altar of Bojnice by the Florentine master N. di Cione Ortagna from the middle of the 14th century. Part of the chateau tour is also a visit to the stalactite cave under the chateau, with which the 26-meter-deep chateau well is connected. The most famous among the numerous events at the castle is the International Ghost and Spook Festival, which takes place regularly at the end of April and beginning of May. During this period, Bojnice Castle becomes a meeting place for ghosts, witches and vampires from all over the world. In front of the castle entrance stands the famous six hundred year old Bojnice linden tree of King Matthias, whose trunk circumference is about 12.5 meters. The king himself was very fond of visiting Bojnice and holding feasts and consultations under the linden tree.
