Greinburg Castle Grein
Greinburg Castle Grein
For more than 500 years, Greinburg Castle, the oldest residential castle in Austria, has been enthroned majestically above the town of Grein and the Danube. It was built between 1488 and 1495 with the imperial approval of Emperor Frederick III by Heinrich and Siegmund Prüschenk and was one of the first castles in the German-speaking world. The castle has a special place in the heart of the ducal family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Acquired by Duke Ernst I in 1823, it served as an Austrian residence and a hunting residence for the following generations.
