Eckartsau Castle

Eckartsau Castle . The imperial hunting lodge with world history.

Commemorative Year 2018 - Countdown of the Danube Monarchy

Nestled in the Danube floodplains east of Vienna lies the imperial hunting lodge Eckartsau, whose history is linked to the House of Habsburg.

Imperial hunting lodge

Enthused by the rich game stocks of the hunting grounds around Eckartsau, Franz Stephan of Lorraine, Maria Theresa's husband, acquired the entire area in the 18th century. The magnificent Baroque palace was the scene of many festive dinners and ball nights.

After Maria Theresa's death, the palace remained in the possession of the Habsburgs, but it stood empty for a generation and was left to deteriorate due to flooding.
